What It Is To Burn
By Laura Adkins

I know what it is to burn inside
to want someone so much,
you just combust.

I wanted, needed you that way -
to make you good as mine;
I'm the selfish kind.

Now you burn too, but not for me;
embers red, a sorry end
borne off on the wind.

Flicker and relight, now hiss and steam;
the flame won't go away.

should I let burn what may?

NOTE: This poem is personal. It's about an old friend from my hometown who I just got in touch with, someone I have always loved and cared deeply for, and now is engaged to be married. This is the same person about which "I Could Fall" is written about. The last line is me saying, should I get over it or should I let that ember keep burning? My answer is, of course, to get over it. And so I will, eventually. It is selfish of me to not be happy for him, when he deserves so much to be happy.
